First test flights of the 250W OTS Airborne Wind Energy System

I didi it! I just made some Airborne Wind Energy. Some, not a lot :) Enjoy the first footage of the 250W OTS System. Generation peaked at 140W before the failures.

Loving the speed of the rigid blades. 

It looks like having a method to reduce drag when the line tension is lower  and reduce power when it's too high might be a benefit in both under and over powered situations.. e.g. the blade swivels on it's normal to the axis of rotation (tips fold backward..). So have a tension sense squeeze a cam and or spring... into place to allow the blade to fall back when it best suits at both extremes.  Has to be able to snap back upward too though... with more force at the max extreme and less at the low power extreme..

hmmm  Need to play with that idea.

Rod, you are right overspeed protection yet has to be build in. Luckily our tower based friends have developed a large variety of methods - many like the one you describe can be build into the rotor. The massive changes in speed btw. are not mainly caused by the sound gusts but by me having problems with the generator control app. It lost connection when moving too far away and i can never remember if i have to swipe up or down to increase generation :) /cb

Did you try any tests of driving the rotor from the bottom (with the bike motor thumb throttle)? 

Rotary power going up the shaft could be useful in launch and land. Also handy if you want to untwist an over twisted shaft.

I did test reverse driving on my test bench - not during the beach test session. It works perfectly fine and is actually how I plan to launch larger versions of the rotor. 

I will also run a center line through the OTS. This will be used to controll the rotor and to reel it in&out. During reel out I will drive the rotor via the OTS. Well, at least that is the plan :)
