An advantage of AWES over conventional wind turbines is the possibility to drive it in order to keep a constant power, in spite of wind speed variations. At least two way can be studied: the variation of the size of the area swept by the kite and/or its tilt angle. When wind speed increases the area swept by the kite and/or its tilt angle can be reduced.

By this the capacity factor could increase drastically, while the nominal power becomes far lower. The management of the electricity supply would become easier.

In the system I propose which uses a cable drive to power a generator on the ground, constant power can be achieved by putting a governor on the cable drive (constant speed control) which will cause constant power output.
